Never doubt that a small, group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.
This past weekend marked the beginning of an old fashioned Chatham Christmas in Pittsboro. Over the next few weeks, our families are looking forward to celebrating with our neighbors what the Pittsboro Business Association has named Pittsboro Holly Days Shana and I are looking forward to more area holiday events to come. What better way to spend this holiday season than being involved in the community! Festivities will begin with the lighting of a 15-foot Christmas tree at the historic Chatham County Courthouse, and conclude with a food drive fundraiser to benefit the CORA food pantry; A play based off the timeless, Miracle on 34th Street. Local businesses will be hosting specials during the events.
Currently in North Carolina we are watching the leaves fall, searching the net for pumpkin spice everything, stacking firewood, and buying the latest trends in outer wear. With only a month of this season left, we are well on our way into the Winter season, and with that come the string of days we all experience that lead to what’s known as cabin fever. Being outside in nature is definitely a feel good time for my family and I. We have another six months before we are back on the lake and at the beach again so in the house we are! I wanted to write a post that inspired being happy in your home-creating or sprucing your ideal free time space!
Creative use of this vintage find!
Sometimes all you need to become motivated is a great desk!
Utilize the last ‘nice’ days of the year to fix up the old shed! Install a heater and you won’t want to leave this space all winter!
Transforming the office into your creative oasis? Open up your space with curtains-remove those closet doors!

Don’t ignore your creative self. Growing up, I recall being happy and content for hours on end doodling, and watercolor painting, filling the walls of my bedroom with mixed media images that I created and felt good about hanging. Flash forward twenty years, other than interior designing, I can’t recall the last time I reveled in any art medium that included ‘pen and paper’, for personal enjoyment. When I get the slightest moment of free time, I find myself eager to turn on the last episode of Ladies of London. Numerous studies like this one include research that being involved in an art form is linked to better health and wellness.
Binge Watch In Style
Only in style and comfort can one enjoy episode after episode of The Pioneer Woman…
I like the use of levels in this kitchen plant decor. The plants on top draw the eye upwards creating the illusion of high ceilings and large windows.
Buy organic, plant organic!
Living in a small space doesn’t mean limiting yourself.
I love the idea of using teacups as décor in the kitchen.

“Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts. There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature — the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter.”
― Rachel Carson, Silent Spring
You may, or maybe you haven’t noticed, your peanut butter grocery aisle expand in variety with its selection of nut butters. The past few years, nut butter companies have produced butters to appeal to a larger whipped protein palate. You are no longer having to decide between, ” Crunchy or Creamy”. Your selection of nut butters, in most stores, offer almond, cashew, and even sunflower seed butter. I have also seen varieties containing seeds and flavor blends of chocolate and apple. As a kid, our pantry was stocked with Jif, creamy- a good, no frills peanut butter! Not too long ago I was at a friends house and she cast the gold out of her cabinet that is Big Spoon.
While volunteering for the Peace Corps, Big Spoon Roasters founder, Mark Overbay, was living in a small farming community in Zimbabwe. There, he learned how to create nut butter through a fire and stone grounding process, while incorporating ingredients like, salt and local honey. Mark was unlucky in finding a nut butter here in the United States that rivaled what he had experienced in Africa. Mark has spent much of his life following his work in Zimbabwe, creating delicious nut butters that align with health and nutrition, as well as operating and advocating for sustainability and just business practices.

“Big Spoon’s philosophy about food is based on the belief that food matters. it matters to our health, our happiness, and the well being of our planet. We believe that food should be delicious, nutritious, and good for all involved producing it.”

Skip the grocery aisle! Big Spoon Roasters is available online for purchase here. I’m entertaining some friends from out of town this weekend-stay tuned for the seasonal drink I’m planning to pair with an appetizer featuring my next jar of Big Spoon Roasters!
Planning to host guests in your home this holiday season?
Creating a comfortable and memorable stay BEFORE your guest arrive will allow you to entertain and enjoy your time spent over the holidays with family and friends, rather than view accommodating as another chore on your already busy To Do list. I’ve included just a few small gestures to help you prepare your home before the in-laws, brothers, and cousins’ family arrive!
LIVING ROOM Make your guest feel comfortable while everyone is hanging out in the living room by having throws and pillows available without having to adjust the whole room temperature. Source: Coastal Cottage
Seasonal ENTRYWAY décor: Pick up a few pumpkins from your local farm, carve images with the kids or paint your own welcoming phrase! Source: Midwest Living
This ENTRYWAY allows style to follow function. I like that guests know where they can hang their outerwear once entering your home. A boot tray lets your guests know whether or not shoes are allowed on beyond the door.

GUEST BEDROOM Have a few of your favorite reads bedside in the guest room. This is a great (not to mention, cheaper) entertainment alternative to installing a television in the guest room.
